Kintu - Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi

It is a very character based novel, it is really about people, but doing so it also tells about the land Uganda. It is intimate; views of the landscape or towns are scarce. The (violent) history of Uganda (Kony, Amin) are backdrops for the personal stories of the family.
It is about a curse in a family, laid down centuries ago and how it inflicts this family today. But the modern characters do argue, what is this curse, and isn't this just something in ourselves, our depression, our mental states? It is about modernity and old cultural customs. With all these characters it did miss something for me, like a suspense that links all the families and engrosses you to read to a solution.
